As the first extended wrestling season, athletes began competition on Oct. 23 and end Feb. 20. The team faced the returning Arkansas state champion, Bentonville, in a tournament in Oklahoma and won with a score of 3-2. Senior Thai Ta and sophomore Joseph Williams brought home two medals.
“We expect to go far this season, even with all the new people on the team. We’re all still trying to find our unique styles,” Williams said.
Wrestlers participate in the Big West Conference which includes most of the 7A schools in NWA this season. They also compete against Rogers schools this season, which last occurred nine years ago. Along with wrestling teams in state, the guys participate in tournaments against surrounding states.
“This season, I most look forward to state contenders and national contenders,” sophomore Caleb Fowler said.
Team members prepare for the season by practicing, competing, and participating in camps all year round. Coach Robert Moore keeps the guys working on techniques, conditioning, and aggressiveness in order to have a well-rounded approach to the season.
“We have been working hard all school year and some kids have been practicing, competing and going to camps for the last seven months,” Moore said.
Moore believes the wrestlers’ level of work and experience in the wrestling room gives them an advantage. He says that having all-state wrestlers helps the other wrestlers when practicing.
“We prepare by practicing every day after school and by watching the pros in actions as well as talking to each other,” Williams said.
