One Father’s Day years ago, my family went to Devil’s Den with family friends. While there, the teens of the group decided to venture on a hike out past the waterfall. We did lots of climbing as we made our way to a bridge in the distance, but along the way, we ended up climbing back down into the stream. As I tried climbing down the slope, my foot slipped and down I went. The slide caused me to stain my favorite pair of jean shorts and my foot cramped as I slid down with a rock following close behind me. Nonetheless, the day proved fun for everyone.

Getting a workout in proves difficult for many, including me. My priorities include school work, hanging out, and going to church. But as often as I can, I try to get in exercise in less traditional ways.

My all-time favorite way to exercise includes lots of sweat and hard work. Hiking. Before a good hike, I pack a small bag with plenty of water, sunscreen, extra hair ties, and granola bars for snacking on.

Some of the best hiking destinations around here in my experiences include Mount Magazine, Mount Nebo, and Devil’s Den. The difficulty levels range, which works well with my family and friends. When on a hike with me, catch me ahead of everyone else, eager to explore nature and get scared of nearby sounds.

Ever since my childhood days, biking has also been one of my favorite ways to squeeze in some physical activity. My favorite purple bike escorts me throughout the neighborhood when I need to clear my head or want to feel refreshed and energized. Riding alone feels great, but having my dad or a friend with me to encourage me feels even greater.

In elementary school and early junior high, my best friend at the time invited me over for bike rides all the time. We’d take two of her bikes out to the street behind her house, which was lined with houses under construction, and ride back and forth along the long street.

I look forward to biking and hiking in places like the Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park someday. For now, I wait for cooler days so I can take on more local trails.
