During my free time, I enjoy propping up against a pillow with my laptop shining on my face. I most often spend that time watching YouTube videos, and my favorite couple to watch is Kate Albrecht (an actress) and Joey Zehr (a musician), also known as Mr. Kate on social media.

Mr. Kate started off as a blog in 2011, and the couple has since transformed their work into an inclusive, online community. I first fell in love with the Mr. Kate YouTube channel a little less than a year ago during Thanksgiving break. I was cuddled in bed one morning watching videos when I somehow came across Mr. Kate and their DIY home improvement videos. I love all things interior design and crafting, so of course I spent the entire day (and I mean entire day) watching videos.

Both Kate and Joey create incredibly hilarious content. Kate’s very outgoing and lively personality makes me feel a lot better on a bad day. Their bright personalities, excellent tastes, and impressive abilities would inspire me to take a trip to Hobby Lobby and redecorate my room, but I’m broke.

On their channel, Kate and Joey create different playlists categorized by “seasons.” For example, the first season I stumbled across was season one of “OMG We’re Coming Over,” in which the couple went to different YouTuber’s homes to redecorate a room for them. They allow the homeowners to help them decorate and DIY crafts for the first half of the day, but then send them off for the second half so that they can be surprised by the final product. So it’s like a modernized version of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition.

Besides having an eye for interior design, Kate also creates art prints, jewelry, and her BeautyMarks, temporary tattoos designed to be sparkly freckles. Her unique and colorful work coordinates with her playful slogan, “because why not?” She reflects her personality in her products (she even has an underwear line, but I’ll leave that to you to look into).

With a lot on her plate already, Kate went above and beyond and wrote a book called A Hot Glue Gun Mess: Funny Stories, Pretty DIY Projects. I still need to read it, but I hear it’s worth the buy so I’ll purchase it soon. The book, composed of unfiltered stories from Kate’s hectic life, also describes 50 approachable projects, which I for sure want to try. My room will look 10x better when it’s said and done with.

Next time I’m stuck inside on a rainy day, I’ll catch up on Mr. Kate videos with a bag of Doritos by my side.
